During the digital event '5G Matinee', Voka and Proximus zoomed in on the potential of this superior mobile network. Will 5G make a difference? What possibilities does 5G offer? How are companies already using 5G? And how do you best prepare?

For example, 5G ensures better control of Automated Guided Vehicles or AGVs. Because 5G enables real-time information processing, the AGVs are aware of the environmental situation at all times and can orient and position themselves perfectly. Logistics service provider H.Essers is testing vision technology as a navigation system for autonomous AGVs. This technology plays a very important role in the automation of warehouses and is a stepping stone to the ultimate goal: the use of self-driving vehicles.
Project virtual building models in real time
Mr Watts is making an application for the construction company Hooyberghs to project virtual 3D models of the construction site onto reality. The models are streamed from the server via the cloud to a HoloLens that makes them visible in AR. In the future, a 5G connection will ensure that this can be done without any latency and in real time.
The key lies in the guarantees that 5G offers in terms of the capacity and speed of mobile data. 5G is a 100% stable, secure and wireless connection that is up to 10 times faster than 4G. Thanks to the enormous bandwidth and the reliable data transfer without latency, 5G is able to connect an infinite number of objects. This offers companies and organizations opportunities to make their processes more efficient, more secure and more mobile.
“5G is a general purpose technology”, says Head of 5G Gaetan Dewingaerden during the panel discussion of ‘5G Matinee’, the digital event that Proximus organized together with Voka. “The technology is in a position to change the whole of society because it connects different forms of innovation: it is about the combination of 5G with AI, 5G with robots, 5G with cloud applications, and so on.”
There are, however, a few obstacles. Not only is the auction delayed, there is also the issue of radiation standards. "In Belgium we’re lagging behind a bit anyway," says Tom Cassauwers, technology journalist and author of '5G, the backbone of our future.' "Most of our neighboring countries already have 5G."

It is the technology that should take Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT) to the next level, among other things.
“So 5G opens up completely new possibilities in terms of productivity and customer experience,” adds Dieter Somers, digital transformation advisor at Voka. This will yield major benefits in areas such as healthcare, manufacturing, public safety and transport.”

In a logistics environment with many disruptive elements such as metal and racks, 5G performs better than Wi-Fi. By connecting vehicles, warehouses and buildings via 5G, a company amasses a huge amount of data and gets a much better and more detailed view of its own operations.

Thanks to the much higher broadband connectivity and network capacity, the public authorities receive real-time information and images, anytime and anywhere, without any delay. In this way they can correctly assess crisis and other situations, communicate 100% safely and reliably and always intervene appropriately.
Remote assistance by doctors
For example, with 5G a reliable connection can be made between paramedics in an ambulance and doctors in the hospital. When the paramedics are called, they can request the complete file of the casualty while on their way. The doctors can give specific instructions to the care providers to make the correct diagnosis more quickly.
Co-creation is crucial. So Proximus built a 5G innovation platform to put new ideas into practice together with companies. There are few barriers to access and there is no need for huge investments.
